Once upon a time…
Be careful what you wish for.
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's groundbreaking, Tony Award‑winning musical comes to life in a lyrically rich retelling of the Brothers Grimm — featuring all of your favorite characters: Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch.
At its heart are a Baker and his Wife, who wish to have a child; a girl who wishes to attend the King's festival; and a boy who wishes his cow would give milk. To break a witch's curse, they set off into the woods — and wind up changed forever.
Every story begins with a wish. In the woods, each one tangles with the next — and no one comes out quite the same. Here are the souls you'll follow into the trees.
"I wish we might have a child of our own."
"I wish to go to the King's Festival."
"I wish my cow would give us milk."
"I wish… just a few more sweets before Granny's."
"I wish to be beautiful once again."
"I wish to find the maiden of my dreams."
…and the giants in the sky.
